[00:00:00] SA hello, my name is Noor Al Masri. Welcome to Echoes of Impact with Noora.
[00:00:37] Today's going to be a little special on what we're going to talk about. I've been receiving a lot of emails and a lot of requests from you guys. Want to learn more about my business and how did I still have the business and also doing this TV show and I'm still ongoing in the business.
[00:01:00] So I decided to tell you the story since also we are in April and April is usually the month that I celebrate the anniversary of Nourish Books.
[00:01:12] So what I'm going to be sharing with you today is going to benefit someone.
[00:01:21] That someone might be you because you might be going through the same journey. You might be on the edge of maybe giving up on your journey. Giving up on what you might be doing your business, a podcast or whatever that project you are working with, you might be giving up. You might be thinking, oh, can I succeed? So I wanted to share a journey with you, my own journey. So you can see the ups and down that I went through during this years of my business journey.
[00:02:00] So I started my business back in 2021. It was February when I first registered officially. However, I did not really announce that I have a business yet. I just registered officially with the state, got my ein and I was like, okay, this is the name. This, this is what I'm going to be doing. And I started officially now, didn't announce anything, had no idea how I'm going to start the business officially. Like not officially, not, not, not the registration part but I mean just going to talk to people and tell them about the business. How do I get my first client? Had no idea because my reason to start a business in addition to a lot of other reasons. But one of the things I wanted, the flexibility. I wanted to to work from anywhere on the world. Reason why I had at that time I had to travel between Texas and Chicago. So I needed something virtual. I didn't want to spend a lot of time in Chicago.
[00:03:09] I mean I didn't want to like be tied in somewhere like without being able to travel to the other place. So I wanted to be able to spend as many times as much time as I possible in Chicago, as much time as possible. And Texas and I decide and the circumstances in my family and the situation I was in at that time decide not because I have to be working in an office. So that's why this is the main reason why I decided, okay, I'm going to start a virtual tax and accounting firm. We'll know.
[00:03:49] I kind of lied. I wanted to have a bookkeeping business. That's what I actually started to be, bookkeeping business. So I registered the business called Nourish Books. And that's why it's Nourish Books, because it meant to be accounting business, bookkeeping business. So that time I'm like, okay, what do I do? So I decided to join a coaching program.
[00:04:19] How did I learn about it? Through YouTube. So I was listening to a lot of YouTube YouTubes for the last six months before I started my business. And then I came across someone who I thought would be a great coach. So I joined her program.
[00:04:41] I learned from her everything that held my business to be a six figure business in the first few years. So I joined the program.
[00:04:57] But before I joined, I know like before you start making money, sometimes you think, okay, but I don't have money yet. Which one will come first? The money or investing in the business? If you think about it, you always have to give before you receive.
[00:05:17] So you always have to invest. So you cannot start a restaurant before investing. So you cannot get the clients before you start investing. At least, at least in the ingredients of what you're going to cook. Even if you want to start from home delivering to the clients.
[00:05:37] And you, you cannot open the restaurant before you don't, you cannot get the clients even before you have invested into building the restaurant, the kitchen of the restaurant, the tables, the decor, everything that you need to start a restaurant. So why when you start, want to start a business, professional business, you would expect to have the money before you invest in the business. The nice thing about the service business that is professional business, whether be it an accountant or a lawyer or a coach, it's very easy to enter. So you need to invest, but you don't have to invest so much before you start.
[00:06:24] So in my case, I was like thinking when I was listening to the coach at that time, before I decided to join her, I was like, well, I will join her program after I get my first clients. And then she gave that discount. I was like, okay, let me use my personal credit card for now. So I decided to join. And that was the best decision I had to do.
[00:06:51] So I joined the program. I decided to go through the material before I let people know that I started a business.
[00:07:02] So I took Marsh to study the materials, to start working on it, to prepare to launching my business.
[00:07:11] And I had a goal to be April 1 as the time, the day I wanted to start the business. But then I found myself finishing my the material Finished preparing everything I needed to prepare in the last week of March.
[00:07:29] So I decided to go live on Marsh. How did I go live?
[00:07:35] I had a. I had help preparing very, very basic website. Just really, really basic.
[00:07:42] I had someone from overseas helping me doing it. It was very basic, just so that people can see norris books.com and they can go and book a call with me.
[00:07:54] And I, I had, I set my calendar so people can book with me. And I prepared the social media. I had some resistance to use my own social media to tell people about my business. But in the coaching program, that's what my coach teached. And when I asked her, she said, no, it's your personal. And I had a lot of resistance on that because I'm like, I feel I don't want to do it, I don't want to do it alone. I want to, I want to start a new one so people cannot see me in my personal stuff. But I decided to just do what the program was saying. So I started using my, my personal social media. Facebook, LinkedIn and Instagram @ that time. So I started using that. No, for Instagram I actually started notice books Instagram. So I used it on Instagram. But for LinkedIn and Facebook I used my personal. Yeah, I did have a business page but everything I was posting, I was either posting on my personal or at least sharing it from my business page. Because if you think about it, it's even more beneficial. I had a lot of bits, a lot of people on my social media, people who know and trust me and it was very beneficial. I was correct. It was the right, the, the right step in the right direction. When I did that, I was able to get my first two clients or actually they were more than two clients. It was three clients in April, but two of them were monthly recurring clients.
[00:09:43] So just from using my social media and announcing my business, that was awesome.
[00:09:52] From being virtual fair and just having people from my own social media. And three, three of these people, they were actually from the people I know, they knew me before, they trusted me, they know the quality of my work from whatever I do.
[00:10:15] So I got these people and gradually I get more people from the groups from other places, people I know and people I don't know from just using my social media and following the strategies within the program I registered for. So if you are in that space and you're starting a business or maybe you started but you're not sure if, what should you do? Or maybe you are stuck somewhere, don't hesitate to start with a coaching program because that's going to save you time, money and heartbreaks and you won't know what you don't know. So you might think you know everything but because you don't know what you don't know, you don't know what you're missing. So take the first step and join a coaching program or, or have a coach that helps you or learn from someone who really can help you who had the success from what you want to have a success from.
[00:11:21] So tell me if you, if you have a coaching program in mind that you want to join or maybe you joined and have so some, some wins from joining the wood. The I can't talk anymore. From joining the coaching program or not. I would love to hear from you and you can email me at hello Echoes of Impact and tell me your story. I would love to hear from you now. I'll be right back with more about my business journey after the break. This is your host Noora Masri. And this is Echoes of Impact with Noora. We'll be right back. We'll be right back.
[00:12:36] Welcome back. This is your host Noora Mosri. And this is Echoes of Impact with Noora. Today I'm telling you about the story of my business.
[00:12:48] So we were talking about the coaching program I joined and how did that help me grow my business and even start my business. So I told you like the business was supposed to be a bookkeeping business and this is what, what I was I had in mind before I start the coaching program and this is what I was determined to do. But then because of the coaching program, because of one question I asked my coach, I decided to try doing taxes.
[00:13:22] I asked her once I started, this is how I started my question. I said my business is only bookkeeping business. I do not do want to do taxes. And I was just like going to ask my question.
[00:13:36] She asked me why, why not?
[00:13:40] And I was like, yeah, really, why not? Let me try. So why not? Let me try. If I didn't like it, I'll just keep it as a bookkeeping business. If I like it, I'll just move forward with it because I used to be very intimidated in taxes even though I'm an accountant and this is what I've done, I've done like my taxes before taxes for some of my relatives but just was like a help. It wasn't something that I wanted to do as a profession. I didn't want to do it for everyone.
[00:14:12] I started doing business. It was a late tax season when I joined. If you Remember that year in 2021? It was during COVID It was the year after Covid started, and the tax season was extended at that year. So I got a chance to do some taxes, and I got some clients. Some of them were from the people I already know who trusted me and give me a chance. And some people were learned about me somehow, like from the outreach, from the things that I was doing. And I had few clients. So when I started doing taxes, I loved it and I enjoyed it really, because it's. I found this is. This is not a boring thing. This is really challenging. This is something that I can do and I can benefit. I can get benefit for people. A lot of people don't know a lot of things. I wish I knew before I started this. I wish someone had told me this because, like I said, like, I was very intimidated on tax, about taxes. So I just don't want to do it. Like many of you I know are like that. On that year, my coach decided to start. She's been doing actually teaching the enrolled agents materials so people can go do the.
[00:15:37] So they can do the exam and become enrolled agents in 2021. So I decided to go for it and did it, and I was able to pass within 90 days.
[00:15:50] I also passed one of my CPA exams that year. So I was a student, and I wanted to learn everything about taxes. I went ahead and I did a lot of online studies. I did my taxes, other people taxes, and I really enjoyed it. And I figured that taxes is not boring at all. It's actually every client is their unique story, if they're unique things. Like, no two cases are the same. So I started enjoying it a lot. And I was like, oh, I'm glad I did it. I'm glad I started it. Because if I did not try it, there's no way that I could be able to. I could know that I will enjoy it, and I would love what I'm learning.
[00:16:38] So that's how my business turned into tax and accounting, not only bookkeeping.
[00:16:45] So in that year, I invested in my business a lot, even more than 2021. And the more I invest, the more I get return on investment. That's what I noticed in my business, everything I invest in I get 10 times at least the return of what I invest in. So it was amazing. It was something that I was never gonna figure out if I didn't try on my own.
[00:17:18] So this is where I discover really, like, you should give first in order to get the return. You cannot expect a return or A good return or the return that you would want to have before you start investing. Part of the investment that I did it was hiring. I started hiring for my business after, let me see, like, I started officially on April and I hired the first person on July.
[00:17:52] Yes. After three months only, I hired four virtual assistants.
[00:17:58] The reason why I hired because simply I did not think there were some stuff that I needed to do in my business that I was intimidated. I did not want to do. Reaching out in private messages, on my social media. I was thinking a lot about what could I share, what could I tell people, what I could tell people. And I did not want to do it. It was taking me a lot of time, draining me. I felt, oh, no, is it good enough? Is it not good enough? So I decided, okay, this is important for my business, so it should be done. It's taking me a long, long time. It's draining my energy. So I cannot do so many things. After I try to do this, this has to end. So I decided to hire other people who can help me do that so I can get it done, because it has to be done in order to grow my business.
[00:19:04] So I hired four VA and I divided the tasks between them.
[00:19:13] That helped me book so many people into my calendar. And I was able to grow my business a lot between 2021 and 2022, when I say a lot, about 200% growth, and that year even a little bit more.
[00:19:34] So I want to tell you here, if you think there's something in your business that has to be done, but you are dragging it, you don't want to do it, you are hiding it, you don't. You want to forget about it because you just don't want to do it.
[00:19:49] Maybe it's time to figure out a sol. A solution where you can get help, where someone can do it for you. Because if a VA is doing that for me, she's not going to think as much as I would think about what I'm doing now. You might be thinking, well, what if she makes a mistake?
[00:20:14] She will, guaranteed, sometimes embarrassing mistakes.
[00:20:19] But you just have to learn to accept those mistakes and to overcome them. They're going to happen.
[00:20:27] Some people will be angry because the mistakes, because they will think so many things. Some people will understand.
[00:20:33] Both are fine.
[00:20:36] Let me tell you. Having a business will teach you a lot about yourself that nothing else will teach you.
[00:20:43] The having a business and dealing with everything that you have to do to grow your business will teach you so many things you will not be able to learn. Anywhere else. So it's okay. You need to invest in your business. You need to delegate. You need to make sure your business have the growth that you want to see. If you want to grow. If you want a real business, you need to invest in it. You need to have coaching. You need to keep growing and accept mistakes.
[00:21:19] An opportunity came my way when in 2022 because I am in a community of other accountants in the coaching program that I was in.
[00:21:35] So I received an invitation to co author a book about taxes. It's called Tax Strategies for Small Businesses. It's available on Amazon.
[00:21:46] I received that invitation so I wrote a chapter on that book. For me, that was my first try. It wasn't perfect, but it was great information for those who want to learn more. I was at that time really passionate about estimated taxes and fbar and I wrote about them because I wanted to have more people know about them because so many people did not know about them.
[00:22:14] So for me, when I have a knowledge, I like to give it to another people I love. I like to transfer that knowledge to other people.
[00:22:24] So I found that as an opportunity to share my knowledge and to have more people avoid penalties that they shouldn't have.
[00:22:35] So I joined that book. I was a co author with about 12 other great tax professionals.
[00:22:44] We came together and we wrote the book and the book was published on January 2023 and it became bestseller on Amazon.
[00:22:56] It was a great experience. It was a great learning experience. It was a great time to be a best selling author. This all opportunity came because I invested my business, I invested in my network through that coaching program and I was not afraid to try something new. I was not afraid to put myself out there. And you too should not be afraid to put yourself out there and try something new.
[00:23:28] If it failed, that's okay. You can always try again.
[00:23:33] If you don't try, you will never know if that was the good thing for you or not.
[00:23:39] All right, we'll continue after the break. We will talk about resistance and I'll share some stories with you on some trouble I had during my business, some failures.
[00:23:54] So you don't give up when you have some failures, it is okay. It is part of the journey.
[00:24:02] I will see you after the break. This is your host, Noor Al Masri. And this is Echoes of Impact with Noora. See you. We'll be right back.
[00:24:30] Foreign welcome back. This is your host, Noora Masri. And this is Echoes of Impacts with Noora. So I was talking about investing in your business and how I became a best Selling author from trying something new.
[00:25:00] Now, early 2023, I became that best selling author because I joined that book.
[00:25:09] And I learned through the summit that we did, we organized a summit to announce the book and I learned about Streamyard. Streamyard is the tool that we use to come and talk about the book.
[00:25:26] And I learned something great, that I can go live on a lot of social media at the same time.
[00:25:35] I went live on LinkedIn, Facebook and YouTube at the same time and I loved it. So I started using that to go on YouTube. Now when did I start YouTube? I started YouTube back in 2022.
[00:25:54] Yeah, back in 2022 I was terrible on YouTube. Literally I was reading. Everyone could say I'm reading. I was nervous. If you go look up my YouTube channel, you would see how nervous I was, how uncomfortable I was and I would have a script and I would read that script and be very nervous. I had my daughter back then edit my videos. She was, she's talented on this area. Like she does my pictures, my photos and my videos and she was able to help me edit videos. So she used to do that.
[00:26:34] Then in 2023 she was busy, she got busier and she didn't have time to help me edit videos. So when I found out about Streamyard, I was like, okay, yes, I am going to go live every single day during tax season using streamline Streamyard. Why?
[00:26:54] Because I thought this would be easier. If I go live, I don't need to edit so I don't need to worry about anyone editing my videos. But also I will show up and people will see me like me and trust me so they can start connecting with me and see if we can talk and see if we are good. I can serve them and they can get the service that they need from me and I can spread the knowledge. Like I said, like I'm all about education. Actually education is one of the core value for new rest books because I, when I learn something, I like to share the knowledge. That's why I'm doing Echoes of Impact. That's what I did. I wrote my book and this is why actually I started my YouTube. So I was like, this is perfect. So I started going live every single day and then going live every single day. What do you talk about? And then I started getting people as guests so other tax professionals, other people like and non profits and business. So I started talking to these people on my YouTube just to go live every single day. This way we can talk, get people some knowledge that we know they don't know they need, maybe they need at this time. So I was so consistent going every single day except the weekend.
[00:28:18] So I did that.
[00:28:20] And that was something that I was never expecting to do when I started the business. But I saw how important that was. I told you, I found my coach through, through YouTube and I got a lot of people connecting with me through YouTube. In fact, echoes of Impact probably is existed because of YouTube and it's on YouTube also, if you missed the episode or if you want to listen to it again. It's also on demand on everywhere. But YouTube is a great platform that everyone has access to, so you might want to use it for your business because how would you differentiate yourself from other people if you do not share your knowledge, if you do not show up where people look for information?
[00:29:17] So that's what I decided to do. YouTube every single day.
[00:29:23] That year, 2023 was a very difficult year.
[00:29:29] Yes, I had the success, but I also went through divorce.
[00:29:35] So. And I went, I. And I told you I also invest, invested in my business a lot. I invested to the point that I cannot invest anymore. Because you know, even if you wanted the divorce, it's still hard time. So you still kind of suffer. You're not in the mood, you cannot deliver, you cannot really give your business so much. So it did, it did affect my business and I had to let my team go at that time, I had four people like I like. Couple of people changed, but a couple of them stayed with me from the first year until 2023. But I couldn't afford to have them anymore because like I said, my business took a hit at that time, so I had to let them go. I was devastated because now I'm back alone. I had more clients than before. I have to do customer service, I had to do client care, I had to do social media. I had to do the work to fulfill the taxes, bookkeeping. Everything that I was doing, doing at that time, the coaching for nonprofit, everything that I was doing, I had to do it alone.
[00:30:57] And I want to thank my clients who sticked with me at that time where I was going through a very, very hard time through divorce.
[00:31:09] But even though all these happened, guess what else happened? My business still grew for about 30% comparing from the prior year. So still I was able to grow my business alone, without anyone else.
[00:31:32] Because I kept at it even when I saw it like going down the hill. I can't. I do not have cash flow.
[00:31:43] Because yeah, the business grew, but I was investing a lot. So I had a lot of commitment. I Had a lot of things that I need to pay back.
[00:31:51] I am in a very devastated state of mind because of the divorce and everything comes with it. So it was hard, it was a hard time. I could have easily give up on my business and say, hey, closed, closed, no more business and let me find a job and go make some money. That's easier.
[00:32:13] So much easier. Let me tell you, having a business is not easy. You are responsible for everything. If you want to have a real business, you want to grow, you want to do so many things, you want to get the client, you want to fulfill the, the order that they have or hire someone and follow up, make sure the quality is the quality you want to, you want to deliver for your business and to have a team and all of a sudden you have no one to help you. Oh my God. If you've been through that, you know, feels, it feels terrible.
[00:32:47] At that time I was also working on my own book.
[00:32:52] It was solo book at that time. So I wrote the book during that year and I was able to publish the book on January 2024.
[00:33:05] Yeah, the book was delayed like few months, but I was able to do it and it became a bestseller on Amazon.
[00:33:14] And again that book is available on my website and on Amazon. So you can definitely go look it up. Especially if you are a non profit or looking to start one. You'll be able to get to that a lot of information. I'm very proud of that book because it happened and I wrote it in a very difficult time in my business and in my life.
[00:33:38] So resistance also is one of the core value we have at Norris Books. We have five core values. Core values are very important for your business, very important to see what your business is standing on. And this is important when you want to talk to your team.
[00:33:59] Your team will know how to operate and be consistent of your business. Core value, you will always refer to it. So resistance.
[00:34:11] And I invite you to always be persistent. Don't give up. So the, the only difference between people who win with being between people who succeed and people who lose or do not succeed is resistant. Because all of us, whatever that you're doing, you're gonna go with, out on up on down, up and down with everything.
[00:34:33] But if you keep at it, if you keep trying, if you keep learning and trying new ways and if you know there's a correct way and the right way you're doing it, you be patient to see the result, you will arrive, you will be able to see results. Okay?
[00:34:52] So make sure you never give up. On something that you really want to do, on your dream, on your business and your project that you always wanted to do in your marriage. If this is a marriage, you know that is going to work out in your kids. If you know your kids needs you and there's something that you can do always in anything in life, keep at it. You will be able to achieve whatever you want to achieve if you just keep at it and keep making it better every time.
[00:35:27] And never give up. So never give up. This is my message to you in this segment and we will talk more about my business and more after the break. This is your host, Noora Al Masri, and this is Echoes of Impacts with Noora. We'll be right back.
[00:36:17] Welcome back. This is your host, Noora Al Masri, and this is Echoes of Impact with Noora.
[00:36:24] So we are now in 2024. So in 2024, I decided to hire again because I cannot keep going with my business was just only me and keep growing and keep getting clients.
[00:36:41] So I decided to hire. It was, it was terrible, like because I was so afraid I don't want to hire someone and then let had to let them go. What if I couldn't pay them? What hundreds of hundreds questions came to my brain.
[00:36:58] Like my brain was like jumping up and down like, what if you could not keep these employees?
[00:37:07] So I decided like to calm down and okay, let's move on and let's do it the way it should be, or at least I think it should be. Let's take what I learned from the first time of hiring and not do it, not do the same mistake again.
[00:37:27] So I we can share like I can share with you, like what I've learned from the hiring in the beginning and how is it now in a later episode. But for now we'll just keep it at that. I started hiring and I hired two people, actually three people at that time. One people had, one person had to go, but the other two, they are still with me until the moment.
[00:37:51] And they ended up being great team, great people to work with, very responsible, very reliable. And they were going just with the core value with the training. I told them like how the quality of work should be and everything. They are really great people.
[00:38:13] So and I'm glad that I took that step even though I was so afraid.
[00:38:21] So I would tell you here, don't be afraid to do it. Afraid to go ahead and do what you think should be done, even if you are afraid. That is normal with any steps, especially if you got a bad experience before.
[00:38:38] So I had, I got new people and I got time then to start networking more with people. Up until that point in 2024 I was only doing online networking and reach outs only online.
[00:38:59] So in 2024 I decided to start going out and do it in person. So I joined BNI Group. If you are not familiar with the bni, it's Business Networking International.
[00:39:14] So I joined the chapter that was newly formed in my area and I joined another group also.
[00:39:23] And any opportunity for networking in person networking I used, I was joining Every time all 2024 I was doing that.
[00:39:37] Let me tell you, that was the best thing I've ever done because networking in person is a totally in different level. Not saying that online is not good, it is definitely good and I was able to grow my business to a six figure just with online. Just with online? Yeah. Like connecting with people on social media and I still to the day get a referral from people I spoke to in the first year of my business. Second year they still refer people to me.
[00:40:12] Sometimes I even forgot the people they are talking. Like they would say oh so and so referred. Referred me to you and I would have forgotten who was that? Because I talk to a lot of people. My calendar is always books and I spoke to a lot of people. So even if that person did not use me, they still refer people to me. Because you know what I do something very important. I always do follow up not only in a personal level but also I do follow up by email.
[00:40:50] So whenever I talk to a person, their email and phone number are with me and I do email my mail, my mailing list consistently.
[00:41:03] So they, they always remember me because of that I'm always stayed on top of their minds because they always hear from me, they already spoke to me and now they are consistently receiving my emails. So it works magically. So don't ignore the information you get maybe from a networking event, maybe from just connecting with people online. Make sure you build your email list and use it. Just collecting email without using it is not going to give you any advantage. You only have to use it. So are you using your email lists or are you just joining the networking events, collecting information? Never use them. Maybe never log in into your login them like maybe in your mailchimp or whatever email platform that you're using.
[00:42:03] So make sure you use your network, your network is your net worth is true not only when you want to find a job but also when you are growing a business online. On in person networking give me a lot of advantage. Give me a Lot of opportunity to meet people, new people every day around my area.
[00:42:31] So whatever your situation is, if you cannot do the in person networking, that's okay.
[00:42:40] You still can do the online networking.
[00:42:44] But if you want to learn how to do it the right way, you may want to join a coaching program. There's a lot of coaching program out there. I learned from my experience. Nothing you do that will not give you a value. So don't be afraid to invest. It might be good, it might be bad, but you will learn something that's going to take you to the next level. That's for sure. That's guaranteed.
[00:43:10] If you put in the work. Now if you don't put in the work, don't expect anything to happen. Because no matter what you join, no matter what you learn, if you do not apply the information you get, you will go nowhere. You need to really put the action in place in order to see the result.
[00:43:34] Your business will learn, will, will grow every day if you keep learning.
[00:43:40] Now currently I am into coaching programs but in a different level.
[00:43:45] I invested a lot in software that will make my life and my clients life get better and be easier just because I would invest in my, in my business. Now I also, like I said, invested in true coaching program currently because I'm doing a lot of other stuff and I want to make sure I learn every single day in both level the fulfillment and marketing and growing my business. Because as a business owner you should always be working on your business.
[00:44:27] Not only in your business, but you don't want to ignore working in your business because this is why your client hiring you to do the service or to deliver the product for them. So if you're just growing your business without taking care of the fulfillment, you will lose. And if you just taking care of the fulfillment and you are not growing your business every day, you're not marketing, you're not doing sales. You'll also lose.
[00:44:59] You will have days without clients, you will have times without any income. And that cannot happen in business. You always have to take care of your business. You always have to do whatever that take you to the next level. And to keep up with the industry that you are in and to keep up with your clients. You don't want to be outdated. With everything going on. Technology is always running and now even growing more with AIs and everything going on, you need to be on top of your business. You need to be educating your client to tell them why would they need you. Because like I said in the beginning, you don't know what you don't know.
[00:45:38] So if you don't know something, you really don't know that you don't know it, so you're not going to ask for the service. Same thing for your clients. If they don't know why they need you, they wouldn't come looking for you. So you need to educate them. So if you're looking to educate your client, I want to offer you the opportunity to be with me, a guest at Echoes of Impact.
